Malmi is experiencing growth and development as the Malmi airport transforms into a park, with new residential areas and school being constructed nearby. The hangar will play a pivotal role in this development, positioned at the core of the plan. My proposal is to repurpose the old aircraft storage hall into an ice rink. The architectural design and existing spatial layout of the hall are ideal for this purpose. The concept aims to preserve the hangar's vast space and create a new function with simple, respectful modifications.
The new ice rink is designed for all local residents, especially the future students of the new school. The hall will also accommodate other sports and events, particularly during the summer when the ice is melted. For several winters now, an outdoor skating track has been available at Malmi airport, and the hangar's large sliding doors can be opened in winter, connecting the ice rink to the outdoor track.
The ice rink will retain the hangar's exterior appearance almost unchanged. A new entrance will open on the side of the building, leading users through a large lobby on to the ice. On the first floor, the ice rink will be surrounded by a concrete bench. Additional facilities will include changing rooms, sports areas, and a gym. The second floor will feature a café, a spectator stand curving around the ice, as well as offices and meeting rooms.
Structurally, the new concept maintains the hangar's existing spatial solutions. The grandstand will be built in the large space, with smaller rooms integrated along its sides. The material choices aim to blend with the hangar's current architectural appearance, using concrete and glass. The changing rooms on the south side will be rebuilt, while the smaller wing building will remain unchanged, but with new purposes for its spaces.
